UNOPS Cumberland Bridges and River Embankment Protection

Alpha in association with Trinidad Contractors Limited (TCL) were contracted by the UNOPS for the provision of Design and Construction services for the Cumberland Bridges and River Embankment Protection in Spring Village, St. Vincent.

The scope of works included:
  • Lot Nº1: Main Bridge Reconstruction:
  1. Design and build of the North Leeward Highway Cumberland Bridge, including reinforced concrete foundation, abutments, wing walls and retaining walls, approach slab and bridge deck using precast pre-stressed concrete beams.
  2. Design and build of reinforced concrete foundation and abutment to accommodate a double lane Acrow bridge provided by the Ministry of Works and install said Acrow bridge based on a 36.5m (120ft) span.
  3. Design and build of the control of runoff, via a retaining wall and clearing existing culvert, of two watercourses across the main road on the southern approach to the main bridge. 
  • Lot Nº2: Three Other Bridges Repair:
  1. Little Gutter Bridge: Repair the damaged and scour right side abutment, replace the handrails, protect the visible steel in the main bridge. Construction of a light pedestrian sidewalk structure on the inside (downstream side) of the bridge bend, approximately 8 meters long and 1.2 meters wide.
  2. Grove Bridge N°1: Repair the undermined footing and abutments on both sides, replace damage section of the handrails to match existing.
  3. Grove Bridge N°2: Construction of an Irish bridge, scour protection, approach roads and associated kerb and slipper drain.
  • Lot Nº3: Embankment Protection:
  1. Embankment protection between the main bridge and the downstream by-pass (2200m3).
  2. Embankment protection near the Spring Village school area. Rip-rap protection between the existing concrete wall and the bend of the river.
  • Lot Nº4: Road and Culvert Repair:​​
  1. 80sqm of road patching between Spring Village and Gordon Village.
  2. Repair / Replacement / Clearing of seven culverts.
