 St. Vincent Regional Disaster Vulnerability Reduction Project​

Alpha was engaged by Geotech Associates Limited to execute sub-consultancy services for this CDB funded Regional Disaster Vulnerability Reduction Project for the Treatment of Instabilities in the areas of English Gutter, German Gutter and Ginger Village, Saint Vincent.  

The scope of work included:
  • Hydrological studies; defining contributing catchments from topographical information and contour maps; defining applicable rainfall event, comparing with recent storm and recommendations using 1:25-yr recurrence interval storm for design, 1:10-yr and 1:5-yr peak discharges.
  • In absence of local IDF curves, curves were developed using existing rainfall data and compared with relevant nearby islands, for input into calculations and models.
  • Examine hydraulics using peak flow derived and determine flow regime and flow velocity to confirm erosive velocities and at which recurrence interval storm, to establish failure due to erosion.
  • Determine optimal solutions to arrest erosive storm flow velocities and review in conjunction with Geotechnical Engineer for solutions to reinstate roadway/slopes along with possible retaining structures.
  • Examine details for arresting surface runoff upstream in the catchment .
  • Develop detailed designs upstream or downstream measures to reduce erosion and hydraulic elements like culverts or drainage channels.
