The Grenada Electricity Services Ltd. planned to install solar panels to augment their supply at three potential sites in the vicinity of the old Pearl Airport Site north of Grenville on the east coast of the island.  Alpha was commissioned by GRENLEC to carry out an engineering assessment of the flood risks posed at these three sites in order to make recommendations for mitigation of the associated risks identified.

The scope of work included:
  • Data collection and review of topographical information, tidal data; flood maps, solar panel installation information, to ascertain the relevant details for associated risk to inundation from potential flooding.
  • Hydrological studies and catchment definition for the proposed sites.
  • Defining applicable rainfall event to compare with recent storms for calibration of  models and include factors for climate change.
  • Model catchments and develop peak discharges at point of interest and adjacent to the site.
  • Examine hydraulics related to flooding using peak flow to determine the susceptibility of the sites.
  • Flood risk assessment and identification of mitigation measures for each site.
  • Recommendations to client for preferred site and for mitigation against potential flooding.
